Some of the possible solutions to mitigate ocean acidification are as follows:
- Reducing greenhouse gas emissions: Reducing greenhouse gases will mean less concentration of carbon dioxide in the oceans, in turn less chances of ocean acidification.
- Geoengineering: Geoengineering means large-scale intervention to reverse the earth’s climate. Although it is a proposed method for ocean acidification. Its feasibility and scale is still debated.
- Iron fertilization: Iron fertilization of the ocean could stimulate photosynthesis in phytoplankton. The phytoplankton would convert the ocean’s dissolved carbon dioxide into carbohydrate and oxygen gas, which would sink into the deeper depths of the ocean.
