The salient features of the Environment Protection Act 1986 (EPA, 1986) are as follows:

  • The EPA covers all types of pollution: air, water, soil and noise
  • The act provides safe standards regarding the existence of various pollutants in the environment
  • It bans the use of hazardous material. However its use is permitted provided permission has been granted by the Central Government
