What effect did Emperor Ashoka have on Buddhism?

Ashoka patronised Buddhism by building a number of stupas, Sangharama, viharas, chaitya, and residences for Buddhist monks all over South Asia. He even sent Buddhist missionaries all over South and Southeast Asian to propagate the message of Buddhism
