A cyclone is any large system of winds that circulates about a centre of low atmospheric pressure in a counterclockwise direction north of the Equator and in a clockwise direction to the south. The two main types are the tropical cyclone and the extratropical cyclone. Extratropical cyclones develop in the mid and high latitudes, beyond the tropics. Tropical cyclones originate and intensify over warm tropical oceans.
