The Communal Award was rejected by Mahatma Gandhi in 1932 as he feared that the award would disintegrate Hindu society by creating racial divide in the community.
The Communal Award was also criticised by the Akali Dal – the representative body of Sikhs – since only 19% was reserved to the Sikhs in Punjab, as opposed to the 51% reservation for the Muslims and 30% for the Hindus.
