What is the Full form of CNG?
The full form of CNG is Compressed Natural Gas. CNG is a fuel that can be used in replacement of diesel, petrol & LPG (liquefied petroleum gas). The burning of CNG creates less toxic gases than the previously mentioned fuels. Natural gas provides less of a risk in the case of a leak compared to other liquids, as it is lighter compared to air and scatters fast once it is released.
History of CNG
- The late 1800 model implemented the use of natural gas as a fuel for automobiles.
- The very first natural gas engine was manufactured in the US and shortly after the 2nd World War, Italy and many other European nations implemented CNG as their primary engine fuel.
- CNG is used in oil reservoirs. It may also be obtained from sewage treatment plants and landfill sites.
- It is brought to less than 1% of the standard atmospheric pressures by compressing natural gas. It is held at a pressure of 20-25 MPa and distributed in quite tough cylindrical & spherical tanks.
Properties of CNG
- CNG is an odourless, colourless and tasteless compound with noncorrosive and nontoxic properties.
- The primary use in automobiles is as a substitute for gasoline.
- Methane is the main component of CNG.
- It generally produces few greenhouse gases.
- It is very healthy as it easily scatters into the air.
- CNG is derived mainly from natural gas wells, coal wells, bed methane wells and oil wells.
Advantages of CNG
- It’s cheaper than its other replacement example diesel & petrol used to run buses and other automobiles.
- Particularly in comparison with the vehicles operating on diesel and petrol, the cost of maintenance of cars running on CNG is low.
- It’s more environmentally friendly as it releases less toxic and unnecessary gases than other alternatives, i.e. petrol & diesel.
- It extends the life of lubricating oil as the crankcase oil doesn’t really dilute & contaminate.
- It requires a great temperature with an autoignition of 540oCor even more.
