Early nationalists, also known as the moderates, wanted to achieve self-governance and they strove for autonomy within the British Empire. They were not aiming for complete independence initially.

Assertive Nationalists, known as extremists, were radical in their approach. Their demands were aggressive and they wanted to resort to extreme measures to achieve complete independence from the British Empire.
