PING Full Form

What Is the Full Form of PING?

The full form of PING is the Packet InterNet Groper. It is a computer network management system software or utility software used to test the network communication between two devices. The classification of such systems considered may include any commonly used personal computer, switch, server, gateway or router. It was constructed to ensure or check whether or not the particular device on the network stays on the network.

A Brief History of PING

  • In December 1983, Mike Muussas invented the PING utility. It is a method for troubleshooting issues within an IP network.
  • David Mills was the inspiration behind the design and development of PING utility software.
  • For IP Network analysis and estimation, he utilised the ICMP echo packets.
  • The first version released was public domain software, while all subsequent versions were licenced under the BSD licence.
  • 4.3BSD was the first time ping was used.
  • Erick Engelke carried out the designing of the FreeDOS edition, and it is licenced under the GPL.
  • Tim Crawford carried out the design of the ReactOS version, and it is licenced under the MIT License.

Working Principle of PING

  • Ping works by sending an ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) echo demand packet to a destination host and continues to retain an ICMP echo acknowledgement.
  • The software overview of the analysis reveals errors, packet loss rate, and a numerical summary of the analysis overview, typically consisting of low, maximum, and average round-trip times and standard means variation.
  • If the two systems are connected to the network to test the connections in an arrangement to produce a response from the other system, a series of packets is guided from one device or another over the network.
  • The other device sends an acknowledgement to state that both systems via that network are associated in connection with each other.
  • The difference in the command-line choices of the PING utility and its output takes place in the form of many executions.
  • The command-line options include the scale of the payload, the number of trials, the number of network hops (TTL) limits that are checked around the range, an interlude in the middle of the queries, and the waiting time for a response.
  • Several systems make the ping6 companion utility accessible for testing on Internet Protocol version 6 or IPv6 networks that execute ICMPv6.
