Why is Vidyasagar known as a great teacher?

Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar is known as a great teacher due to his efforts to dispense education irrespective of caste or gender differences. 

In addition he played a leading role to modernise Bengali prose and also rationalised and simplified the Bengali alphabet and type.
