What are Verbs?
An important part of speech is the verbs. The basic concepts of verbs are introduced to students while they are in their primary classes. The definition of the verb is “A verb is a word that tells or asserts something about a person or thing.” In simpler terms, the verb denotes what the person or thing is doing, i.e. verbs are action words. For example, “The sun sets in the west.” Here, ‘sets’ is the verb. Verbs can be divided into two main classes, i.e. the Principal Verb (Main Verb) and the Helping Verb (Auxiliary Verb).
Principal verbs (Main verbs) are those verbs that generally show what action/state the subject is in. Principal verbs are used independently in a sentence. For example, “The cat eats the fish.” Here, ‘eats’ is the principal verb. The principal verb can be divided into two classes, i.e. transitive verbs and intransitive verbs.
- Transitive Verbs – Transitive verbs are those verbs that transfer/shift the action from the subject or the doer to an object. In simple terms, transitive verbs require an object to make sense clear. For example, “The child plays with the ball.” Here, the verb ‘plays’ gets passed from the subject/doer “child” to the object “ball”.
- Intransitive Verb – Intransitive verbs are those kinds of verbs that don’t require any object to make its sense clear. For example, “Birds fly.” Here, the intransitive verb is fly as it doesn’t get transferred from the doer/subject to the object.
Auxiliary Verbs (Helping verbs) are those verbs that are used with principal verbs (main verb) to express their voices, tenses and moods. For example, “Harry was going to Hogwarts.” Here, ‘was’ is the auxiliary verb that determines the tense of the verb ‘going’, i.e. past tense.
