  • Rabindranath Tagore returned his knighthood in 1919 because of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.
  • Rabindranath Tagore was given a knighthood for services to Literature in 1915 by King John V.He was the first Indian to receive the knighthood. He renounced his knighthood in protest of the mass murder of the people in Amritsar, Punjab.
  • A knighthood refers to a title given by the British King/Queen for a person’s achievements or contribution to society.
  • Jallianwala Bagh Massacre

    • Also known as the Amristar Massacre, it took place on 13 April 1919 at the Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, Punjab.
    • People gathered there to organise a peaceful protest against the Rowlatt Act and the arrest of Dr. Saifuddin Kitchlew and Dr. Satya Pal. Troops under the command of General Dyer sealed off the exit and fired at the crowd, resulting in 379 deaths and 1200 being affected.
    • The Hunter Commission appointed by the British enquired about the massacre.
    • The Jallianwala Bagh site is currently a national monument.
