Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi, was a social reformer and an iconic figure of the Indian independence movement. He is considered a champion of non-violence and an ardent follower of truth. He is regarded as one who brought a striking change in the global political discourse by introducing the ideas of nonviolent resistance called ‘satyagraha’.
Mahatma Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar to a prosperous family. His father was Karamchand Gandhi, and his mother was Putilibai Gandhi. He was an intelligent student, and as he grew up, he moved to England to study law. After attaining the title of a barrister, he returned to India and started practising law at the Bombay High Court. After a few years of practice, he moved to South Africa, ruled by the British. From there, he experienced the oppression of the Europeans. They considered Indians and native Africans as their slaves and treated them dreadfully. Gandhi, who was then not interested in continuing practising law without involving in social issues, decided to drop the legal profession and joined hands with the people of Africa to fight against racism.
Gandhi devoted himself to the freedom of Indians and underwent numerous sufferings in his life. After returning to India, seeing the miserable plight of Indians, he organised various movements like the Civil Disobedience Movement, Non-Cooperation Movement, and Quit India Movement to uproot the British from India. He followed the principle of ‘Satya Vachan’ (Speaking the Truth) and upheld ‘Ahimsa’ to fight for Indian independence. He propagated the use of ‘swadeshi’ (domestic) products among his followers and asked Indians to boycott the use of foreign products. He wore simple and self-made Khadi clothes and suggested people follow his path. Gandhi was a man of strong persuasion with a noble soul. He was a secular person who respected people of all communities equally. He conducted various programmes all over India for the upliftment of untouchables and named them ‘Harijans’, meaning the children of God. He died on January 30 1948.
