What is the full form of HDMI?

The full form of HDMI is the High Definition Multimedia Interface. It is an all-digital audio-video interface that transmits information to a computer monitor, video projector, digital television and so on, in uncompressed mode. For example, uncompressed video information and compressed or uncompressed digital information from an HDMI-authorized source unit.

HDMI is the digital equivalent of analogue audio and video formats that have been used extensively in the past for several decades. Market HDMI production began in late 2003. Since then, different HDMI models have been planned, developed and introduced, all with cables & connectors.

Different types of HDMI

Various types of HDMI cables are available.

Standard cable

It is often referred to as the HDMI cable Category 1. It functions at 75 MHz pixel rates, enabling a bandwidth of around 2.23 GBps. It is ideal for sending a 1080i signal that is uncompressed.

High-speed cable

It is often referred to as the HDMI Level 2 cable. It functions at 340 MHz pixel rates, enabling a bandwidth of around 10.2 GBps. For the recent 1440p & WQXGA resolutions, it is suitable.

Benefits of HDMI cable

  • As it facilitates both video and audio signals, a consumer doesn’t require any separate audio wires.
  • It allows a user to use a few wires to set up multiple connections that make the link process easier and entirely eliminate the disarrangement of different cables.
  • As the new laptops & computers come with an HDMI connection, this helps a user to turn his TV into a computer screen.
  • It can modify the form into DVI by using a virtual adapter which offers more significant link chooses.
  • Several audio formats are preferred, including traditional stereo, multichannel sound system, and so on.
  • It can carry video codecs in high definition. As well as high-quality resolution formats such as PAL / NTSC, it can also have improved resolution formats like 480p.

Limitations of HDMI cable

  • The HDMI category 1 carries a distance of about 35 metres, while the HDMI category 2 carries a distance of about 10 metres.
  • Authentication delays can often lead the way towards blank screens.
  • In contrast to analogue cables, HDMI cables are costly.
  • It is strenuous to run multiple apps that are concurrently spread through various sites.
  • It requires a separate audio wire to be used for DVI interfacing in a series. An HDMI-DVI adapter is also required.
