What is a Plural Verb?

Students often confuse plural nouns and plural verbs. The term plural makes them think that they have to add ‘s’ or ‘es’ at the end of verbs too. But that’s not the case! Before knowing how plural verbs are used, it is important to know when plural verbs are used. Plural verbs are used when more than one object/person is doing an action, i.e. in simpler terms, if the subject is plural, the verb used will be plural too. For example, “The dogs bark at night”. Here, ‘dogs’ is the plural subject, so the verb used will be in plural form, i.e. ‘bark’. Unlike plural nouns, the plural verbs don’t add ‘s’ or ‘es’ at the end. This process of putting a plural verb with a plural noun to match the verb with the subject is called subject-verb agreement.

Rules to Use Plural Verbs

There are some rules that children need to keep in mind when they are solving plural verbs worksheets. These rules will make it easy for them to solve these worksheets.

  • If two or more singular nouns/pronouns are joined by “and”, then a plural verb is used. For example, “Gold and platinum are costly metals.”, “Are your mother and father going to the party?”.
  • If one of the subjects joined by ‘nor’ or ‘or’ is plural, then it takes up the plural verb. And the plural verb should be put nearest to the verb. For example, “Neither the professor nor the students are present”.
  • A collective noun might take up the plural verb depending on how it’s composed and what it means. For example, “The committee are divided on their opinion”. Here committee means the members of the committee are divided on their opinion among themselves.
