What are Plural Nouns?
Plural nouns represent those nouns that are more than one in number. Converting singular to plural is a common question that is asked by teachers to primary class students. But while students convert singular to plural, they have to follow a few rules to do so.
- Singular Nouns ending in is, sh, ch, x, and z become plural by adding es in the end. Examples: match becomes matches in the plural, the brush becomes brushes in the plural and so on.
- Singular nouns ending with f or fe become plural by replacing f or fe with ves in the end. For example, the wife becomes wives in plural form, half becomes halves in plural form.
- If singular nouns end with y preceded by a consonant, then in plural form, the y gets replaced by ies. For example, penny becomes pennies; the lady becomes ladies in plural form.
- If singular nouns end with y preceded by a vowel, then in plural form, s is added after the y. For example, the toy becomes toys; the boy becomes boys in plural form.
- Finally, most singular nouns can be converted into plural forms just by adding s in the end. For example, the girl becomes girls; the kite becomes kites in plural form.
