Difference between Archenteron and Blastocoel

Archenteron

Archenteron is a tube-like cavity formed in animal embryos during gastrulation. It acts as a primary gut for the embryo. The archenteron is formed by the process of invagination of the endodermal and mesodermal cells into the blastocoel. The cells add on to form a vegetal plate that passes through the blastocoel and lengthens the archenteron. Blastopore is the open end of archenteron. Later, the blastopore can develop into the mouth or anus.

Blastocoel

Blastocoel is a fluid filled cavity that is formed during the blastulation stage of embryo development and forms blastula. It is the first cell cavity that is formed as the embryo enlarges. The zygote divides by mitosis to give rise to a 16-32 celled structure that acts a necessary precursor for the development of zygote.

Archenteron vs Blastocoel

Archenteron Blastocoel
Description
Archenteron is a tube-like cavity that is formed during gastrulation. Blastocoel is a fluid-filled cavity that is formed during blastulation.
Alternate Name
Gastrocoel Blastocyst cavity
Formed During
It is formed during gastrulation. It is formed during blastulation.
Formation
It is formed by the invagination of endodermal and mesodermal cells into the blastocoel. It is formed by mitotic divisions of the trophoblast cells.
Function
It forms the gut cavity of the embryo. Blastocoel is important for the formation of archenteron.

Frequently Asked Questions on Difference between Archenteron and Blastocoel

Q1

What is the difference between blastocyst and blastocoel?

Blastocoel is the first cavity formed during embryonic development, and blastocyst is a mass of cells that is formed a few days after fertilisation.

Q2

What is another name for the archenteron?

Archenteron is also known as the primitive digestive tube or gastrocoel.

Q3

What is a vegetal plate?

A vegetal plate is an epithelial monolayer that helps in the formation of archenteron by invagination.
