PRMO Eligibility

The Mathematics Teachers’ Association (MAT) of India is recognised by the National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM) as the body responsible for conducting the Pre-Regional Mathematical Olympiad (PRMO) examination in India. Those who qualify in PRMO are eligible to attempt the Regional Mathematical Olympiad (RMO) held by Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (HBCSE).

We will look at the eligibility criteria for PRMO below.

Pre-RMO Eligibility

The eligibility criteria for PRMO is listed below.

  • Only Indian citizens are eligible to apply for the PRMO.
  • To appear for PRMO 2022, the applicants must be born on or after 1 August 2001.
  • As per the orders of the Madras High Court, students with OCI (Overseas Citizens of India) cards are eligible for all the stages of the Mathematics Olympiad, other than the final stage of representing India in the final International Mathematical Olympiad.
  • The students studying in Class IX to Class XII are eligible to apply for the Mathematics Olympiad. However, Regional Coordinators allow students of Class VIII with exceptional mathematical skills to write the examination.

The first round of examination is the Pre-RMO (Pre-Regional Mathematical Olympiad). Depending on the performance of the candidates, around 300 students from Class VIII to Class XI and 60 students from Class XII are selected for the RMO (second round) examination.

It is the responsibility of the students to check if they satisfy the eligibility condition for every stage of the Mathematical Olympiad examination. If at any level of the examination it is found that the candidate does not meet the eligibility criteria, he/she will be disqualified from the program.

Frequently Asked Questions on PRMO Eligibility Criteria

What are the finest Mathematical Olympiad books?

Challenge and Thrill of Pre-College Mathematics and Problem Primer for the Olympiads are two publications that are highly recommended.

In this exam, how many students will be chosen?

Each area selects the top 300 students from Classes 8, 9, 10, and 11. The top 60 students from each region’s Class 12 are chosen for RMO (Regional Mathematics Olympiad).

What are the primary requirements for Pre-RMO registration?

To be eligible for Pre-RMO, applicants must have been born on or after August 1, 2001. Pre-RMO 2022 is open to students in grades 8 to 12. The applicant must be an Indian citizen or have an OCI card. Candidates having OCI cards, on the other hand, would not be considered for the Indian team in the International Mathematical Olympiad.

Is it tough to clear Pre-RMO?

RMO is regarded as one of the most difficult Math Olympiads in the country. The preliminary stage would be rigorous enough to identify the top minds who can represent India in Mathematics contests on an international level. This does not, however, mean that such competitions should be avoided. Pre-RMO is required for students who are really interested in the topic.
