The National Science Olympiad (NSO) is a competitive exam for students studying between grades 1 and 12. The Olympiad exam is conducted by the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF). SOF is an educational organization that focuses on academic competition. The main aim of conducting these exams is to develop a competitive spirit among school children. The NSO examination helps the students to understand their interest in a branch of Science and also guides them in pursuing their career in that field.

Overview of Examination
The NSO is a scholarship exam conducted annually by the Science Olympiad Foundation (SOF) with the objective of encouraging scientific thought and logical ability among students in Classes 1 to 12 through examinations.
There are two levels for the examination. The first is level 1, and the student who qualifies in this level will be eligible to write the Level 2 examination. The two levels of the NSO Olympiad exam start from Grade 3.
- The candidates are ranked based on marks obtained in the Level 1 examination. After taking the first level of the test, students can evaluate themselves academically at four different levels – within the school, at the city level, at the state level and finally, at the international level.
- To attempt the second level of NSO examination, the following eligibility criteria are needed.
(a) The top 5% of students class-wise, who appear for the 1st level exam will qualify for the next level.
(b) The top 25 rank holders class-wise of each state.
(c) The class topper from each participating school, also a minimum of 10 students from a class must take the exam and score 50% qualifying marks.
The Pattern of Examination
The exam is an objective-type test consisting of 35 multiple-choice questions for Classes 1 to 4. The examination is divided into three sections.
- Section 1 aims at Logical Reasoning
- Section 2 aims at Science section
- Section 3 aims at the Achievers section

Class 3 Syllabus National Science Olympiad
The syllabus of NSO is completely based on the academic boards of CBSE, ICSE and various state boards. Students who study in any of these boards can take the examination. The NSO syllabus is framed, based on the concepts and theories that the candidate is going to study in the academic year of that particular grade.
