Kidney Stone Symptoms

As we all are aware, our kidney functions by filtering the wastes and excess fluid from the blood cells and are eliminated from our body through the form of urine. In certain cases, the dissolved minerals and some particles of salts present in the urine combine to form small kidney stones.

Kidney stones, are also termed as renal calculi. The size of these kidney stones may range from the size of a sugar crystal to a ping pong ball and are usually found on the inner lining of the kidneys. It is one of the most painful medical conditions. Based on the hard deposits, there are different types of kidney stones, and they vary according to the type of stone, including: Calcium, Uric acid, Struvite and Cystine.

Symptoms of a Kidney Stone

Symptoms of kidney stones may not arise until the stone begins to move down to the ureters and block the flow of urine. These symptoms are different in both males and females.

Listed below are the common symptoms of kidney stones:

  • Fever.
  • Nausea.
  • Chills.
  • Vomiting.
  • Frequent urination.
  • Abnormal urine odour.
  • Presence of blood in the urine.
  • Reduced amount of urine excreted.
  • Recurring urinary tract infections.
  • Pain or burning sensation during urination.
  • Severe pain at the back and below the ribs.
  • Pain that radiates to the lower abdomen and groin.
  • Presence of white blood cells or pus cells in the urine.
  • Discoloured urine – Red, pink, brown or dark-coloured urine.

If kidney stones are too small, then an individual may not feel any pain or may not have symptoms as the stone passes through the urinary tract. Sometimes these stones block the flow of urine, which can lead to kidney infectious diseases and kidney damage. The blockage of the urine is called a urinary obstruction.
