CUET Exam Pattern 2023

The CUET exam pattern for the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes conducted in 2023 is given below. The NTA will conduct the exam from May 21st to May 31st, 2023 in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode.

CUET UG Exam Pattern 2023

The Common University Examination Test (CUET) for undergraduate (UG) programmes consists of 4 sections. The question paper will be of objective type, i.e., comprising multiple choice questions (MCQs). The total marks allotted for each section is 200 and every question will carry 5 marks. There is negative marking and 1 mark will be deducted for every wrong answer. The details of the 4 sections are as follows:

  1. Section IA – 13 Languages  (As a medium and “Language”)
  2. Section IB – 20 Languages 
  3. Section II – 27 Domain specific Subjects 
  4. Section III – General Test 

It is not mandatory to choose options from each section. Candidates can choose options based on the requirements of the desired university. Applicants should check the official websites of those institutions to which they wish to apply and go through the subject requirements for undergraduate programmes that interest them.

Section IA comprises 13 languages, whereas section IB contains 20 languages. The “Language” test is intended to evaluate the candidate’s proficiency in the language of choice. The question paper for the language test will only be in the language chosen by the candidate. The language test will not be bilingual. 1. Candidates can choose any Language/Domain specific Subjects/General Test or a combination as per the requirements of the course in the specific University.

  • Section IB has to be attempted only if candidates want to join a degree programme in any one (or more) of the 20 languages.
  • Section II will test candidates in the core subjects that they wish to pursue.
  • Section III is not compulsory. Candidates need to write this test only if it is a requirement for the degree programme they are applying to.

3 The choice of Tests/Subjects depend on the course/s chosen by the candidate and the University/ies where admission is sought. A Candidate can take a maximum of 9 tests in the following manner

  • Maximum of 2 languages from Section IA and Section IB taken together, maximum of 6 Domain Subjects from Section II and General Test from Section III. 

OR

  • Maximum of 3 languages from Section IA and Section IB taken together, maximum of  5 Domain Subjects from Section II and General Test from Section III
4 Candidates should select those Domain Subjects that they have already studied in class 12. In case a particular subject is not there in the CUET Domain Subject list, then candidates can choose a subject that is most similar to what they have studied in class 12.
5 Applicants must ensure they choose the domain subjects and languages after going through the guidelines given on the University’s website to which they wish to apply.

  • The tests (other than Language test) are available in 13 languages, including Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odiya, Punjabi, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu, aside from the “Language” test.
  • When applying, a candidate must select one of the designated languages as the paper’s medium in accordance with the requirements of the chosen university.
7. The question paper for the General Test and the Domain Specific Subjects will be bilingual, that is, it will include  the language selected by the candidate (one of the 13 languages) and English.
8. CUET -UG exam will be conducted in two or more slots on different days. Candidates should remember the following:

  • A candidate may only take up to four tests in Slot 1, which will be held during the morning shift: one language from Section IA, a maximum of two domain-specific subjects from Section II, and one general test from Section III.
  • A candidate may choose to take up to 5 of the following tests in Slot 2, which will be held during the afternoon shift: 
    • One language from Sections IA and IB and no more than four domain-specific subjects from Section II; OR
    •  Two languages from Sections IA and IB and no more than three domain-specific subjects from Section II
  • A candidate may take up to 9 Tests if they combine Slots 1 and 2.

The  CUET PG exam pattern and marking scheme are given in the table below. Candidates should go through the exam pattern and previous year question papers before starting their preparation.

Points to Remember:  Exam Pattern of CUET (PG)-2023

  • Candidates can select only one paper in one slot.
  • An applicant can apply for three (03) test papers by paying an application fee.
  • An applicant can further apply for more than 3 test papers, candidates have to pay an additional fee (as applicable).
  • Each question paper will have 100 Questions
  • Candidates have to choose either English or Hindi language for the General Paper.
  • Each question will carry 4 marks.
  • 1 mark will be deducted for every wrong answer.
  • Exams will be conducted on multiple days in two slots. Slots, test paper codes, details of the programme are given below.
