UPSC organises an exam for the Special Class Railway Apprentice Exam (SCRA). Around ten candidates are selected through this exam. UPSC SCRA exam will be taken offline. The phases are described in brief:

Phase I
  • Contains MCQ and objective questions only
  • Consists Paper I, Paper II and Paper III
  • Total duration six hours
Total marks 600
Phase II
  • Personality Test/ interview
Total marks 200

Detailed Syllabus and UPSC SCRA subjects

The UPSC SCRA Subjects are selected by the authorities in such a way that the candidates’ knowledge about a vast range of topics gets tested. The detailed subjects of the syllabus of the two phases mentioned by the UPSC authority are given below:

Phase I: Paper I

1) General Ability:

a) Psychological Test: The questions in this part are based on mechanical aptitude and basic intelligence.

b) English: This part contains questions to test the command in the English Language of the Candidate

c) General Knowledge: This part comprises questions to test the general awareness of the candidate. The questions can revolve around the surrounding environment, history, information about the society, politics, etc. The questions in the tests are of 12 standards mostly.

Paper-II: Physical Science

a) Chemistry: This test will contain questions on the Chemistry subject. The questions will be based on standard 12. The questions will be based on Physical, Organic, and Inorganic Chemistry. Some of the topics from where the questions may come are:

  • Chemical Equilibrium
  • Solution
  • Electro-chemistry

b) Physics: This part of the Physical science paper will have questions on the Physics subject. The questions will be based on various topics in Physics, such as:

  • Wave motion
  • Properties of light such as Reflection and Refraction

The questions will be based on the syllabus of Physics up to standard 12.

Paper III: Mathematics

The broader topics in this paper will be Trigonometry, Algebra, Analytic Geometry (two-dimension), Differential Calculus, Integral Calculus, and Differential equations, Vectors and their applications, Probability and Statistics, etc. All the chapters comprising of these broader heads need to be studied. Phase II: Personality Test

Candidates who will be able to clear the first phase of the written exam will go to the next phase. The next phase is the Personality Test, and the candidates will be interviewed by a board of experts. Questions will revolve around extramural topics, academic and matters of general interest. The main objective of the Personality Test is to analyse the candidate’s leadership initiative and other qualities. The successful candidates after this phase will be selected for a training session, and then, final recruitment will follow.
