The Union Public Service Commission sets the IPS subject list for the exam. The UPSC exam is conducted every year, and the IPS officers and recruited annually by conducting the Civil Service Exam. Deputy Superintendent of Police is the entry-level post for the IPS (Indian Police Service) officers.

IPS Syllabus for Prelims
The Preliminary exam for IPS will consist of multiple-choice and objective-type questions. The candidates who qualify for this exam will be called for the Mains. For that, they need to cover the following IPS exam subjects.
Subjects of Paper I (General Studies– I)
- History of India and Indian National Movement
- General issues on Biodiversity, Environmental Ecology, and Climate Change
- Indian Governance and Polity and Governance
- Current events of national and international importance
- World and Indian and World Geography
- Social and Economic and Development
Subjects for Paper-II (CSAT/General Studies– II)
- Comprehension
- Decision-making and problem-solving
- Basic Mathematics

Both these compulsory papers will contain 200 marks each, and candidates will have 2 hours to complete them.

IPS Syllabus for Mains
The UPSC Mains examination is a written test, and it checks candidates’ knowledge of current affairs and academic expertise. It is designed to test the clarity of concepts and knowledge of the candidate.
The UPSC Mains exam will have the following IPS syllabus subjects:
Paper A – Indian Languages (300 Marks)
- Comprehension of given passages
- Short Essay
- Precise Writing
- Translation from English to the Indian language and vice-versa

The candidates need to answer English both the papers, except where the translation is involved.
