PS Meaning and Usage

We all use abbreviations and short forms in our daily conversations. There are a lot of abbreviations like LOL, BFF, WFH, BRB, etc., and all these abbreviations have different meanings and different usages. Using the full form of PS — Postscript — sounds abrupt in a letter and is therefore used as PS or P.S. in short.

What Is the Meaning of PS?

PS means postscript, which is derived from the Latin word, Postscriptum. The word postscript means “written after”. The term postscript or the abbreviation PS is written when an additional message or information is added after the script of the letter or email is written. During the time of handwritten letters, we always used to feel the need to include additional information after the letter was written. At times, it is a funny afterthought which is added at the end of the letter. The term PS is also used in digital marketing, which will also be discussed in this article.

How to Punctuate and Format PS?

Using abbreviations might be a little tricky when it comes to using the perfect format. People often doubt if it must be written as PS or P.S., but there are no hard and fast rules for it. As per the various formats, the abbreviation can be written as PS or P.S. The British and American format says it must be written as P.S., but as per the Chicago Manual of Style, it can be written as PS. Keep in mind that the letters are to be in capital letters.

PS in Email

Emails are easy for you to go back and edit, but for a handwritten letter, you don’t have the option to edit the letter. Therefore, we can reduce the use of PS in emails. Still, a lot of people use PS in their emails, as it is a great way to get the point noticed. Using a PS in a letter or email has also been a direct mail marketing strategy. It has been noticed that a lot of people open a mail or a letter only after reading the PS. Although, with the changing times, people have begun to use it to add a call to action, provide bonus information or share a testimonial.

PS in Letters

Letters are handwritten and are sent through the post office. Therefore, there are chances that we might miss the major information. A PS is also written to bring the reader’s notice to the direct point. Therefore, using a PS is common in a handwritten letter.
