A rock is a naturally occurring collection of minerals, mineraloid matter, or solid mass. There are many types of rocks in the environment. Rocks are classified into sedimentary rocks, igneous rocks and metamorphic rocks.
Igneous rocks are created when the magma or lava in the Earth’s crust cools near the seabed or on the ground. Sedimentary rocks are created by the lithification of sediments or diagenesis, where the turn is created by transport, deposition and weathering processes. Metamorphic rocks are created when the existing rock is transformed into new types of rock through a process known as metamorphism. Here, the heat and pressure change the parent rock into a new rock.
Common metamorphic rocks are quartzite, phyllite, marble, gneiss, and schist. Metamorphic rocks are classified into foliated metamorphic rocks and non-foliated metamorphic rocks.
Foliated metamorphic rocks have a banded or layered appearance produced by exposure to high pressure and heat—examples: slate, schist, gneiss, and phyllite.
Non-foliated metamorphic rocks do not have a layered or banded appearance—examples: novaculite, hornfels, marble, skarn, and quartzite.
