The elements in which the last electron is present in the s orbital are termed s–block elements. It comprises two groups: group 1 and group 2. Group 1 contains one electron in its valence shell, whereas group 2 has two electrons in its valence shell. Its general formula is ns(1−2) and is placed on the left side of the modern periodic table.
The elements of group 1 are known as alkali metals. In contrast, the elements of group 2 are known as alkaline earth metals.
