Elements in which the last electron enters the valence s-orbital are known as s-block elements.
It contains two groups as s orbital can occupy only two electrons. Group 1 or Group I(A) contain one valence electron, whereas Group 2 or Group II(A) contains two valence electrons. They are placed on the left side of the modern periodic table.
Group 1 elements are known as alkali metals, whereas group 2 elements are known as alkaline earth metals.
