Amines are regarded as the derivatives of ammonia (NH3) in which an alkyl or an aryl group replaces one, two or all three hydrogen atoms. Amines are classified as primary (1°), secondary (2°) or tertiary (3°) according to one, two or three hydrogen atoms of ammonia molecules are replaced by alkyl or aryl groups in ammonia molecule. If one hydrogen atom of ammonia is replaced by alkyl (R) or aryl group (Ar), we get RNH2, or ArNH2, a primary (1°) amine. If two hydrogen atoms of ammonia or one hydrogen atom of RNH2 is replaced by another alkyl (R) or aryl (Ar) group, we get R-NH-R’, which is a 2° amine. The second alkyl or aryl group may be the same or different. Replacement of all the three hydrogen atoms of ammonia or another hydrogen atom of R-NH-R’ by alkyl (R”) or aryl group gives R-NR’R”, which is a 3° amine (R” may be the same or different than R or R’).
