Amines are the spin-offs of ammonia (NH3). The alkyl group replaces one or more hydrogen atoms in amines. A primary amine has one alkyl group attached to the major nitrogen atom. A secondary amine has two alkyl groups attached to the major nitrogen atom. In contrast, a tertiary amine has three alkyl groups attached to the major nitrogen atom.
