IEEE Full Form

What Is The Full Form Of IEEE?

The full form of IEEE is the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

IEEE is a technical professional society dedicated to advancing tech and innovation. IEEE serves scientists, engineers, and professionals involved in all areas of science and technology. It mainly focuses on Electronics & Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Information Technology, and Computer Engineering. Headquartered in New York in the USA, it is an association with non-profit organization.

IEEE has sponsored programs to honor achievers for over a century. IEEE praises dedicated individuals, colleges, and leaders who make a positive impact on their profession and tech as a whole.

History Of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE)

  • A small group of electrical professionals formed an organization named the American Institute of Electrical Engineers (AIEE for short) in 1884.
  • A new industry of wireless telegraphy gave rise to a new society in 1912, the IRE (Institute of Radio Engineers).
  • With the growth of membership in both societies, the IRE grew faster to become the larger group in 1957.
  • The IRE and the AIEE merged on 1 January 1963 to form the IEEE. At its commencement, the organization had 150,000 members, out of whom 140,000 resided in the US.
  • IEEE continued to spread over the decades that followed. By the early 21st century, it grew into 39 Societies; 130 journals, transactions, and magazines; 900 active standards; and more than 300 conferences annually.
  • IEEE comprised over 395k members in 160 countries by 2020.

Characteristics of IEEE

  • A body of appointed and elected volunteers lead IEEE. They represent members from 10 worldwide geographic regions and 46 Societies and technical Councils.
  • 39 societies address numerous technical areas, with each of them individually focusing on separate areas.
  • IEEE sponsors various programs to honor educational, industrial, research, and service-related achievements.
  • It holds more than 300 conferences annually.
  • There are 900 active standards, with about 700 under development.
  • IEEE produces 30% of the published literature in computers, electrical engineering and control technology.

Technologies Standardized By IEEE

  • IEEE 1284 – Parallel Port. It is an interface utilized by the early desktop PCs.
  • IEEE 1394 – Firewire. It is a high-speed interface for digital video cams, external hard drives, and other audio/video peripherals.
  • IEEE 802 – LAN/MAN. Local Area Network and Metropolitan Area Network.
  • IEEE 802.1 – MAC. Media Access Control
  • IEEE 802.2 – LLC. Logical Link Control
  • IEEE 802.3 – This working group defines the standards of the physical layer and data link layer’s access and control over wired Ethernet.

Benefits Of IEEE

  • Their data communication system is much faster than the transportation speed.
  • Its multi-path propagation improves the rate of transmission and reduces error incidence.
  • Manual fixing of the modulation used by the transmission.
  • IEEE develops standards for the electronic and computer industry.
  • IEEE, being a non-profit professional association, works for the growth of humanity.

Limitations Of IEEE

  • It has reports of unauthorized usage among people.
  • IEEE standards require periodic and proper maintenance.
  • The network security needs to be robust.
  • IEEE 802.11 has traffic disruptions.
  • Wi-Fi-ready devices can catch any data transmission via radio waves in the area.
