Tamil Nadu’s famous Cumbum Panneer Thratchai, also known as Cumbum grapes, has received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

  • The Cumbum valley in Tamil Nadu is known as the ‘Grapes City of South India’ and cultivates the Panneer Thratchai, a variety also known as Muscat Hamburg that constitutes almost 85% of the grape-growing areas in Tamil Nadu.

Cultivation and Production:

  • Theni district is one of the highest grape-producing areas of Panneer Thratchai. However, the ‘Panneer’ variety is chiefly associated with Cumbum Valley, where the cultivation area covers around 2,000 acres at 10 villages.
  • The agro climate and the soil condition of the Cumbum region are very conducive to the cultivation of the Muscat variety. This variety is popular for its quick growth and early maturity, ensuring that the crop is available in the market almost throughout the year.
  • The rich soil and water of the land enhance the flavour of the natural fruit. The grape bunches are medium to large in size and compact in nature. The grapes grown are suitable for making wine, spirits, jams, canned grape juice, and raisins.

History and Health Benefits:

  • The Panneer grapes were first introduced in Tamil Nadu by a French priest in 1832.
  • These grapes are rich in vitamins, tartaric acid, and antioxidants, reducing the risk of some chronic diseases.
  • They are also known for their superior taste.

Benefits of Geographical Indication (GI) Tag

  • Legal Protection: GI tag provides legal protection to a product and its producers from unauthorized use or imitation. This helps to preserve the authenticity and quality of the product.
  • Recognition and preservation of traditional knowledge: GI tag recognizes the unique qualities and characteristics of a product that are linked to its geographical origin. This helps to promote and preserve traditional knowledge and skills.
  • Marketing and profitability: GI tag adds value to a product and enhances its marketability. Consumers are willing to pay a premium price for a product that has a GI tag, which can benefit the local economy.
  • Economic benefits: GI tag can help to create new employment opportunities and increase income for local producers, leading to the economic development of the region.
  • Tourism: GI tag can help to promote tourism in the region by highlighting the unique products.
  • GI tag provides international recognition and protection to a product, which can help to increase exports and promote trade.
