National Cyber Security Reference Framework (NCRF) [UPSC Notes]

The National Cyber Security Coordinator of India, Lt General Rajesh Pant (Retd), announced the completion of the first version of the National Cyber Security Reference Framework (NCRF). This framework will serve as the standard for cybersecurity in India, with a particular focus on critical sectors. The project is being driven by the National Critical Information Infrastructure Protection Centre and funded by the National Security Council Secretariat. • The NCRF aims to provide strategic guidance to critical sector entities and other organizations in addressing their cybersecurity concerns in a structured manner.

Critical Sectors Identified:

• The Indian government has identified seven sectors as critical sectors: telecom, power and energy, banking and financial services, transportation, strategic enterprises, government enterprises, and healthcare.
• The NCRF will primarily focus on these critical sectors but will also benefit organizations in general.

NCRF Approval and Implementation

• The NCRF has been approved by the committee overseeing its development.
• Lt General Pant expressed satisfaction with the finalization of the framework and its subsequent approval.
• The framework will soon be made available to the public, allowing organizations to utilize it to enhance their cybersecurity measures.
