What Is The Full Form Of XGA?

The full form of XGA is Extended Graphics Array.

XGA is one of the most widespread screen resolutions introduced by IBM- that supports more simultaneous graphics and colors. As the name suggests, the graphic is present in an extended form. XGA had an interlaced resolution of 1024X768 px, supports 256 colors, and extends the text mode from 80 columns to 132. Later, the developers enhanced the XGA resolutions to 64K colors and non-interlaced. A higher resolution of the display means that the pixel art appears smaller and the displayed video or photo content appears sharper.

XGA is a computer display standard. It provides high-resolution video display mode. The co-processor of XGA uses line drawing, arithmetic and logical mixing, X and Y axis addressing, area filling, etc., in virtual or real memory to provide hardware drawing-assist functions.

History of XGA

  • IBM developed the Video Graphics Array (VGA) in 1987. It had a limited standard resolution of 640X480 px with 16 colors.
  • They later introduced the Extended Graphics Array in 1990.
  • They created and marketed XGA under a patent standard originally intended to replace the Video Graphics Array (VGA) standard.
  • XGA held the ability to increase the color depth at the exact resolution to 16-bit. Or it could provide its users with a resolution of 1078 horizontal and 768 vertical pixels with 256 colors.
  • This improvement in pixel quality for images was drastic. And a number of other display modes superseded it.
  • IBM upgraded its XGA chip in 1992- thus introducing the XGA-2.
  • The XGA format also evolved into newer standards such as WXGA (Wide XGA). It is suitable for modern high-definition, low-end displays.

Characteristics of XGA

  • Pixels – XGA initially had a 1024X768 pixels interlaced resolution, and it supports 256 colors. It also extends the text mode from 80 columns to 132.
  • The XGA resolutions are now 64K colors and non-interlaced.
  • Over all these years, many vendors added more resolutions that were multiples or fractions of the total pixels in XGA.
  • Compatibility – The extended graphic goes well with all video and image formats. They are not only good for PowerPoint Presentations- but also for financial reports, spreadsheets, videos, and more.
  • Efficiency – The XGA resolution is more efficient with light, and yet, it uses lesser power.
  • Flexibility – The image quality performance is outstanding. The pricing is also not too high for users in general.

Limitations of XGA

  • XGA offers lower contrast ratings when it comes to business products.
  • A few modes under XGA have an aspect ratio of 4:3 with square pixels. It does not hold well for some certain standard VGAs.
