The Prime Minister of India launched a scheme in the name of Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jana Urvarak Pariyojana in October 2022. Government schemes are an important part of the UPSC syllabus and in this article, you can read all about the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jana Urvarak Pariyojana for the IAS exam.
Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jana Urvarak Pariyojana
Urvarak is the Hindi word for fertilisers. Since the inception of the green revolution, fertilisers have occupied a central place in enhancing the productivity of crops in India. In the process of enhancing productivity, the farmers in India have ended up engaging in the over-application of fertilisers. This has resulted in increasing the salinity of the soil, pollution of underground water, and soil erosion. This particular situation has warranted the judicious use of fertilisers and their scientific application.
PM-BJUR Features
According to the Department of Fertilisers, an effort would be made to provide for “One Nation One Fertiliser (ONOF)” under this scheme.
- Under this scheme, 600 Pradhan Mantri Sammridhi Kendras were started. These Kendras will not only be a point of contact for fertiliser sales, but they will also enhance the link between the government and the farmers.
- This scheme has promised to initiate more than 3.25 lakh fertiliser shops across the country as Pradhan Mantri Sammridhi Kendra. These centres will provide ancillary services like soil testing, information about soil testing, etc.
- With this scheme, all the confusion regarding the standards and quality of the product would come to an end. Now all the urea across the country will bear the same name, quality and logo.
- This scheme would also help in creating awareness among the farmers in the country.
- Under ONOF, companies are allowed to show their logo, trademark, and information about the product only on 1/3rd of their bags. The “Bharat” brand and the logo of the Bharatiya Jan fertiliser project will be showcased on the rest of the portions of the bag.
- The jurisdiction of this project covers both the private and the public sector companies in India.
- This scheme will ensure that the brand of fertilisers remains uniform throughout the country. Thus, it will reduce the multiplicity of brands and logos.
- Important fertilisers like Urea, DAP, etc, will be sold as Bharat Urea, Bharat DAP, Bharat MOP, etc.
Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jana Urvarak Pariyojana Limitations
Some of the limitations of the scheme are as under.
- Since the companies are discouraged from marketing their products, it will discourage them from participating in this sector. Their role will be reduced to only the government’s contracted importers.
- A lack of freedom regarding the marketing of the products would dissuade the company from engaging in this field. It will thus reduce the spirit of competition in the country.
- Under the current arrangement, if the fertiliser does not serve the required standard, then the manufacturing companies would be held responsible for any discrepancy. But, under the changed scenario, their accountability would be reduced.
Conclusion: This programme is likely to create awareness among the farmers and provide them with services that would help them in enhancing their productivity.
