Context – Google unveiled an experimental conversation AI service called Bard. Bard is powered by LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications), a large language model that was developed and released by Google in 2021. Bard is considered Google’s response to ChatGPT.
What is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is an AI-powered chatbot developed by OpenAI, based on the GPT (Generative Pretrained Transformer) language model. It uses deep learning techniques to generate human-like responses to text inputs in a conversational manner.
- OpenAI’s ChatGPT backed by Microsoft has amassed over one hundred million monthly active users since it was released to the public in November 2022.Â
- ChatGPT is powered by a Large Language Model (LLM), it is programmed to understand human language and generate responses based on large corpora of data.
- ChatGPT’s LLM is called GPT-3.5. It is an upgrade of OpenAI’s GPT-3 language model.
- ChatGPT is trained with 175 billion parameters.Â

Google Bard
Google unveiled an experimental conversation AI service in an apparent effort to take on the popular ChatGPT.
- Bard is designed to provide high-quality responses by drawing information from the web. It will help people explain complex topics.
- Trusted testers will be given access to Bard before becoming widely available to the public.
- Bard is powered by LaMDA (Language Model for Dialogue Applications), a large language model that was developed and released by Google in 2021. A company engineer last year called it sentient AI, a claim the technology giant and scientists widely dismissed.
Difference between ChatGPT and Bard
- Though both Bard and Chat GPT are language-based conversational artificial intelligence models, there are key differences in their design and intended use. Bard gets its information directly from the Internet, unlike ChatGPT, which gets it from the data it was trained on.
- Bard will have access to the most recent data and will be able to deliver more up-to-date information, whereas Chat GPT’s knowledge is restricted to the events through 2021.
Challenges –
- The language-based conversational AI models are trained on a large corpus of text data which may contain biases, resulting in biased outputs such as perpetuating stereotypes or making unfair or discriminatory decisions.
- The large amount of personal data used to train language models raises concerns about data privacy and security.
- The use of AI in decision-making processes raises ethical concerns about transparency, accountability and fairness.
Other Alternatives –
After ChatGPT’s launch, a number of tech companies have doubled down on generative AI technology, and a number of startups are independently working on their own projects. Baidu, China’s answer to Google is the latest company to join the frenzy and its AI is called Ernie. China has been consistently building an ecosystem to fuel its ambition to become a world leader in AI.
Conclusion – The future of AI will depend on the choices and actions of those who develop and use it, and it is important for individuals and institutions to work together to ensure that AI is used for the betterment of society.
