Many TV news programmes were found to have violated the ethics code by the News Broadcasting and Digital Standards Authority.

NBDSA finds News Channels violated Ethics Code

Several news channels have been ordered by the NBDSA to delete their videos from online platforms through a series of directives.

• “During the argument, instead of criticising a few offenders for the deaths and violence, the anchor blamed the religion for the bloodshed that occurred,” the authority said while imposing a punishment of Rs. 50,000 on a news channel.
• The authority stated in response to a complaint about a news programme about the population control bill in Uttar Pradesh that while it was acceptable to discuss the problem of population explosion, the broadcast “lacked objectivity and neutrality as it unfairly focused only on one religion/community as being solely responsible for the population growth.”
• The Authority has penalized a news channel for converting a news debate on hijab into a “communal issue” and not keeping to norms. 
• According to the authority, the News programme broke the standards of neutrality, fairness, and decency.
• The NBDSA emphasized that their issues were with the debate’s narrative rather than the debate’s topic.
• The topic has sparked a controversy linked to the operation of the media in a democracy.

News Broadcasting and Digital Standards Authority (NBDSA)

• The News Broadcasters and Digital Association (NBDA) established the NBDSA, an impartial organisation that represents private television news, current affairs, and digital broadcasters.
• Although it is not a governmental or legal body, its decisions are significant in the sector.
• There are 119 news and current affairs channels represented among the 26 news and current affairs broadcasters that make up the NBDA.
• All of its members are intended to be protected against those who engage in unfair and/or unethical behaviour or who damage television news organisations, online news sources, and other connected organisations.
• It engages in actions to advance, safeguard, and secure the interests of news media, digital news media, and other relevant enterprises, particularly their freedom of speech and expression.
• It establishes and promotes high standards, ethics, and procedures for news broadcasting, as well as how to handle and decide complaints about broadcasters.

• The media also shapes or greatly influences our emotions and attitudes.
