1. Commemorative coin on late Shri NT Rama Rao

Prelims: NT Rama Rao

Context: The President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu released the commemorative coin on Late Shri NT Rama Rao on his centenary year at Rashtrapati Bhavan Cultural Centre.

About Shri NT Rama Rao:

  • Late Shri NT Rama Rao has enriched Indian cinema and culture through Telugu films.
  • He breathed life into the prominent characters of Ramayana and Mahabharata through his acting. 
  • The characters of Lord Rama and Lord Krishna played by him became so alive that people started worshiping NTR. 
  • NTR also expressed the pain of the common people through his acting. He spread the message of social justice and equality through one of his films ‘Manushulanta Okkate’ i.e. All human beings are equal.
  • The President said that NTR’s popularity was equally wide as a public servant and leader. He created a unique chapter in Indian politics through his extraordinary personality and hard work. He initiated many public welfare programs, which are remembered till today. 

2. Neeraj Chopra won Gold at the World Athletics Championships

Context: The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has congratulated Neeraj Chopra for winning the Gold at the World Athletics Championships.

Details: 

  • Neeraj Chopra made history by winning the gold medal in the men’s javelin throw event at the World Athletics Championships held in Budapest, Hungary. 
  • He became the first-ever Indian athlete to achieve this feat, marking a significant milestone for Indian athletics. 
  • Neeraj’s exceptional performance was highlighted by a remarkable throw of 88.17 meters during his second attempt. 
  • This outstanding achievement showcased his skill and dominance in the event, solidifying his position as a global contender.

3. ​​​​​​​PM distributes more than 51,000 appointment letters under Rozgar Mela

Prelims: Rozgar Mela

Context: Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today distributed more than 51,000 appointment letters to newly inducted recruits via video conferencing.

Details: 

  • The Rozgar Mela was held at 45 locations across the country.  
  • Through this Rozgar Mela event, Ministry of Home Affairs is recruiting personnel in various central armed police forces (CAPFs) such as Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Border Security Force (BSF), Shashtra Seema Bal (SSB), Assam Rifles, Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and Narcotics control Bureau (NCB) as well as Delhi Police.  
  • The new recruits, selected from across the country, will be joining the various positions such as Constable (General Duty), Sub-Inspector (General Duty) and Non–General Duty Cadre Posts in various organisations under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
  • The Prime Minister congratulated the new appointees for their selection as ‘Amrit Rakshak’ during the Amrit Kaal. He Called them ‘Amrit Rakshak’ as the new appointees will not only serve the country but will also protect the country and the countrymen.
  • The Rozgar Mela is a step towards fulfilment of the commitment of the Prime Minister to accord highest priority to employment generation. 
  • The Rozgar Mela is expected to act as a catalyst in further employment generation and provide meaningful opportunities to the youth for their empowerment and participation in national development.
  • The newly inducted appointees are also getting an opportunity to train themselves through Karmayogi Prarambh, an online module on iGOT Karmayogi portal, where more than 673 e-learning courses have been made available for ‘anywhere any device’ learning format.

4. Sur Vasudha

Prelims: Sur Vasudha

Context: The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has praised ‘Sur Vasudha’, a musical marvel, performed in honour of the delegates of the G20 Culture Ministers’ Meeting in Varanasi.

Details:

  • The orchestra consisted of musicians from 29 G20 member and invitee countries. 
  • It has celebrated the musical traditions with diverse instruments and vocalists singing in their native languages. 
  • The orchestra’s enchanting tunes embodied the spirit of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” – the world is one family.

5. Exercise Bright Star-23

Syllabus: GS-2, IR

Prelims: EXERCISE BRIGHT STAR-23 

Context: An Indian Air Force (IAF) contingent will participate in ExerciseBRIGHT STAR-23 a biennial multilateral tri-service exercise scheduled to be held at Cairo (West) Air Base, Egypt from 27 August to 16 September 2023.

Details:

  • This is for the first time that IAF is participating in Ex BRIGHT STAR-23 which will also see participation of contingents from the United States of America, Saudi Arabia, Greece and Qatar. 
  • The Indian Air Force contingent will consist of five MiG-29, two IL-78, two C-130 and two C-17 aircraft. 
  • The objective of the exercise is to practice planning and execution of joint operations.
  • It leads to the formation of bonding across borders, such interactions also provide a means to further strategic relations between participating nations. 
  • India and Egypt have had exceptional relationship and deep cooperation wherein the two jointly undertook development of aero-engine and aircraft in 1960s and training of Egyptian pilots was done by Indian counterparts.

6. 26th meeting of the Western Zonal Council at Gandhinagar

Prelims: Zonal Councils

Context: Union Home Minister will chair the 26th meeting of the Western Zonal Council on 28th August, 2023 at Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

Details: 

  • The Western Zonal Council comprises the states of Gujarat, Goa, Maharashtra and the Union Territories of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu. 
  • The meeting is being organized by the Inter State Council Secretariat under the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, in collaboration with the Government of Gujarat.
  • The 26th meeting of the Western Zonal Council will be attended by the Chief Ministers of the member states and the Administrator of the Union Territories, along with two senior ministers from each state.
  • The Prime Minister has stressed the need to leverage cooperative and competitive federalism for the all-round development of the country. In the spirit that strong States make strong nations, Zonal Councils provide a platform to enhance cooperation through a systematic mechanism for regular dialogue and discussion on issues affecting two or more states or the Center and the States.
  • The Zonal Councils hold discussions on a wide range of issues including infrastructure, mining, water supply, environment and forests and state-restructuring, as well as direct benefit transfer (DBT), wider expansion of telecommunications/internet and issues of general regional interests.
Zonal councils:
  • Five Zonal Councils were established in the year 1957 under Section 15-22 of the States Reorganization Act, 1956. 
  • Union Home Minister is the Chairman of these five Zonal Councils, while the Chief Ministers of the States included in the respective Zonal Council and the Administrator/Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territories are its members. 
  • Two more ministers from each state are nominated by the Governor as members of the council. 
  • Each Zonal Council has also constituted a Standing Committee at the level of Chief Secretaries.

7. B20 Summit India 2023

Prelims: B20 Summit India 2023

Context: The Prime Minister Shri of India addressed the B20 Summit India 2023. 

About B20 Summit

  • The Business 20 (B20) is the G20’s official venue for communication with the global business sector. 
  • B20, which was founded in 2010, is one of the most notable Engagement Groups in the G20, including enterprises and business organizations as members. 

Objectives: 

  • The B20 Summit India brings together politicians, business leaders, and experts from across the world to consider and debate the B20 India Communique. 
  • The B20 seeks to produce real policy suggestions that would encourage economic growth and development.

B20 Summit India 2023

  • The theme of the B20 Summit India 2023 is R.A.I.S.E. – Responsible, Accelerated, Innovative, Sustainable, and Equitable Businesses. 
  • Over 1500 delegates from approximately 55 countries are attending.
