ASEAN-India Maritime Exercise (AIME) [UPSC Notes]

ASEAN-India Maritime Exercise (AIME)

  • On May 2 2023, the first-ever ASEAN-India Maritime Exercise (AIME) commenced with simulated military operations taking place in the South China Sea.
  • Indian Naval Ships Satpura and Delhi will be participating in the inaugural AIME-2023.
    • The upcoming exercise has been planned to have the ‘Harbour Phase’ conducted at Changi Naval Base, while the ‘Sea Phase’ will be carried out in the South China Sea.
    • Singapore is hosting the International Maritime Defence Exhibition (IMDEX-23) and the International Maritime Security Conference (IMSC), in which the ships will also be taking part.
  • The upcoming AIME-2023 presents an occasion for the Indian Navy and ASEAN navies to collaborate closely and execute smooth operations within the maritime sphere.

International Maritime Defence Exhibition (IMDEX-23):

  • It is a biennial event held in Singapore that showcases the latest technological advancements and innovations in maritime defence.
  • It is an important platform for naval officers, defence companies, and technology providers to network and discuss industry trends and developments.
  • The first edition of IMDEX was held in 1997.

International Maritime Security Conference (IMSC):

  • It is a global event that aims to enhance maritime security cooperation and coordination between international navies and agencies.
  • Established in 2009 and hosted by Singapore, the conference brings together experts, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss emerging challenges to maritime security. 
  • The conference serves as a platform for sharing insights, best practices, and strategies for enhancing maritime security cooperation among nations.
  • The conference provides an opportunity to discuss the latest trends, technologies, and innovations in maritime security, and participants can network with industry leaders and decision-makers.
  • With the growing importance of maritime trade, the IMSC is a vital event for shaping the future of maritime security and promoting global stability in the maritime domain.

Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN)
  • It is a regional intergovernmental organization that aims to promote economic growth, social progress, and cultural development in Southeast Asia.
  • It was founded on August 8, 1967, by Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia joined later. 
  • The organization has fostered regional cooperation in various areas, including trade, security, education, and culture. Its main objective is to promote peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.
