2. Norms for online bond platforms

  • The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), as the capital markets regulator, has imposed restrictions on online bond platform providers, prohibiting them from offering products other than listed debt securities on their platforms.
  • However, SEBI has permitted these platform providers to offer a range of securities, including Government Securities, Treasury Bills, listed Sovereign Gold Bonds, listed municipal debt securities, and listed securitized debt instruments on their online bond platforms, according to a circular issued by the regulator.
  • As part of the new regulations, Online Bond Platform Providers (OBPPs) are required to register themselves as stock brokers in the debt segment of the stock exchange.
    • OBPPs serve as a platform that enables investors, particularly non-institutional investors, to access the bond market, providing them with an additional avenue for investment.
  • SEBI introduced these regulations after observing that certain OBPPs were offering products other than listed debt securities, as well as debt securities that were proposed to be listed through a public offering on their platforms.

3. Nagorno-Karabakh

  • Armenia accused Azerbaijan, claiming that it was implementing a “policy of ethnic cleansing” and compelling ethnic Armenians to evacuate Nagorno-Karabakh.
  • Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan of Armenia accused Baku of employing “economic and psychological pressure” in order to incite the departure of Armenians from Karabakh.
  • In April 2023, Azerbaijan set up a border checkpoint at the entrance to the Lachin corridor, the only road linking Armenia to the separatist region.
    • Starting in mid-December 2022, a faction of Azerbaijanis has been obstructing the sole road connecting Karabakh to Armenia, protesting alleged illegal mining activities that are purportedly causing harm to the environment.
  • As a consequence, the mountainous region with an Armenian majority, consisting of approximately 120,000 individuals, is facing shortages of food, medicine, and fuel.
  • The blockade in Karabakh has resulted in the closure of kindergartens, schools, and universities, depriving thousands of students of their basic right to education.

4. Promotion of Millets

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has collaborated with Grammy Award-winning Indian-American singer Falguni Shah for a special song to promote the benefits of millets and their potential to alleviate world hunger.
    • Falguni Shah won the Grammy Award for Best Children’s Album in 2022 for her album β€˜A Colorful World’.
  • The β€˜Abundance in Millets’ song, performed by singer-songwriter Falguni Shah and singer Gaurav Shah, is set for release on June 16, across streaming platforms.
  • The year 2023 has been designated as the β€˜International Year of Millets’ after a proposal was brought by India and endorsed by Members of the U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization governing bodies.
