1. Collegium recommends A.P. Chief Justice, senior advocate as SC judges

  • The Supreme Court Collegium has recommended the appointment of senior advocate K.V. Viswanathan and the Chief Justice of Andhra Pradesh Prashant Kumar Mishra as the judges of the Supreme Court to fill two vacancies after the retirement of existing judges.
  • Mr. Viswanathan, if his name is cleared by the government, would be in line to become the 58th Chief Justice of India (CJI) in August 2030, succeeding Justice J.B. Pardiwala.
  • He would also become the ninth lawyer to be elevated directly to the Supreme Court Bench and the fourth such lawyer to become the CJI.

2. India moves closer to getting its first indigenous vaccine against dengue

  • India moves a step closer to developing its first indigenous vaccine against dengue, as drug-makers Serum Institute of India and Panacea Biotec have submitted their responses to the call by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) for collaborative Phase 3 clinical trials for indigenous manufacturers.
  • The Phase 3 trials will be conducted for evaluating the efficacy, safety and immunogenicity of tetravalent dengue vaccines developed by Indian manufacturers.Β 
  • According to ICMR, the dengue viral disease has been associated with significant morbidity and mortality across the country with over 2 to 2.5 lakh cases being reported annually.
    • It is also estimated that about 100-400 million infections occur each year across the world.
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) in 2019, identified dengue as one among the top 10 global health threats.
  • The desirable characteristics of a dengue vaccine according to ICMR include acceptable short- and long-term safety profile, inducing protection against all four serotypes of dengue, reducing the risk of severe diseases and deaths, inducing a sustained immune response and effectiveness irrespective of the earlier sero-status and age of the individual.
