SSC JE Syllabus

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) is the administering body of the SSC JE Exam for recruiting fresh new engineering graduates for the posts of SSC Junior Engineer (Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Quantity Surveying & Contracts).

In this article, we will discuss at length about the latest SSC Junior Engineer syllabus and exam pattern for Paper I and Paper II.

SSC JE Exam Pattern

The salient features of the new SSC JE Exam Pattern for 2018-19 are given below:

  1. There is negative marking of 0.25% marks for each incorrect answer in Paper I.
  2. The SSC JE Syllabus for 2019 consists of two Papers –
    • Paper I (Computer Based Examination)
    • Paper-II (Descriptive Type)
  3. In Paper I and Paper II for General Engineering, an applicant is required to attempt only that section as per the option which was given at the time of filling up the SSC JE Application Form.

The SSC JE Exam Pattern comprises two stages:

  1. Paper I (Computer-based Test)
  2. Paper-II (Descriptive/Written Test)

The time duration of each Paper is 120 minutes. The SSC JE Exam Pattern is given in the table below:

Negative Marking
  • As per the new SSC JE Exam Pattern, there will be 0.25% negative marking for every incorrect answer in Paper I.
  • For instance, if the maximum marks allotted for a question is 1, then answering it incorrectly would incur a penalty of 1/4th marks.
  • There will be no negative marking for leaving a question blank.

SSC JE Syllabus

The SSC JE Syllabus for 2019 consists of two different stages – Paper I comprises of Objective-type questions and Paper II is of Descriptive type/Written Test.

SSC JE Syllabus for Paper I

This Paper is an objective/computer-based test of 200 marks for a duration of 2 hours. Given below are the different sections of Paper I:

  1. General Intelligence & Reasoning
  2. General Awareness
  3. General Engineering:
  • Part-A (Civil Engineering & Structural Engineering)
  • Part-B (Electrical Engineering)
  • Part-C (Mechanical Engineering)

According to the SSC JE Notification, check below the distribution of topics under each section:

1. General Intelligence & Reasoning: This General Intelligence syllabus section mainly consists of questions of both verbal and non-verbal type. This test particularly includes questions which are designed to test the candidate’s capacity to deal with arithmetical computations, abstract ideas, symbols and their relationships and other analytical functions. Listed below are the topics under this section:

    • Relationship concepts
    • Arithmetical reasoning
  • Problem-solving
  • Space visualization
  • Visual memory
  • Analysis and judgment
  • Analogies
  • Decision making
  • Discrimination & Observation
  • Verbal and figures classification
  • Arithmetical Number Series
  • Similarities & differences

2. General Awareness: Under this category, the questions mainly test the candidate’s general awareness of the environment around him/her, knowledge of current affairs, everyday observations and its various applications to society. The questions in this section will be such that candidates do not require a special study of any particular discipline. This section also includes questions pertaining to India and its neighbouring countries especially relating to the following topics:

  • Geography
  • Culture
  • History
  • Economic Scene
  • Scientific Research
  • General Polity

3. General Engineering: Candidates have to choose from any one of these three topics given below. The breakdown analysis of each part is done under the SSC JE Syllabus for Paper – II. This section includes three parts:

SSC JE Syllabus for Paper II

This Paper consists of three parts as mentioned above. The Paper II is a written test of 300 marks for a duration of 2 hours on any of the following parts chosen by the respective candidate:

  • Part-A (Civil Engineering & Structural Engineering)
  • Part-B (Electrical Engineering)
  • Part-C (Mechanical Engineering)

Candidates need to select any one of the parts which they wish to take during the exam. Basically, in Paper II of the SSC JE syllabus includes a detailed explanation of each of the topics under each part as discussed in the General Engineering section of Paper I.

The subjects of SSC JE syllabus Part B i.e. Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Civil Engineering are also the part of  optional Subjects of UPSC Syllabus.
