SNMP Full Form

What is the full form of SNMP?

The Full Form of SNMP is Simple Network Management Protocol.

A standardised internet protocol SNMP is used to collect, organise and manage the data while also monitoring the Local Area Network and the Wide Area Network to ensure they are functioning fine. By using this protocol, there is less effort required to log in to the devices for checking the entire logs, thus confirming the reliability of the internet connection or network. If any suspicious logs or other activity is based on the configuration, the system admin is enlightened.

Components of SNMP

Simple Network Management Protocol is a protocol on the application layer with an OSI model framework. Three components make up the SNMP. They are:

  • A centralised system/ SNMP Manager to observe the network, also called NMS (Network Management Station)
  • A software management system, SNMP Agent, set up on a device that is controlled, such as a router, servers, PC, switches and so on
  • A Management Information Base (MIB) is a manageable source with hierarchically organised data, which constitutes the components that are variables

Evolution of SNMP

Years have witnessed the evolution of an SNMP protocol. Mentioned below are the three significant versions with its features listed:

  • SNMPv1
    • RFC 1028 defined
    • Easily operable
    • Defines the basic action of data polling
    • Security limitations and restrictions of the 32-bit counter architecture
    • Used currently in LAN network, even post the 30 years
  • SNMPv2
    • RFC 1901, 1441 defined
    • 64-bit counter architecture is supported
    • Enhances error handling
    • Unencrypted data
    • Security limitations
  • SNMPv3
    • RFC 3410 defined
    • Security enabled
    • Latest and widely used

Attributes of SNMP

  • Monitor and manage networks
  • Identify the errors
  • Remote devices are configured via SNMP
  • A standardised method of collecting information

Learn the Pros of SNMP

  • Make it easy for system admin by collecting information from every device
  • Enable easy control of data for when needed
  • If any problem occurs, the issue is isolated
  • Make the admin aware of the problem asap via several platforms
  • A thorough analysis of the collected logs gives a better insight
  • Supports visual interpretation
  • Enable easy change of plans, accordingly
  • Flexible networks with auto-discoveries and templates reduces the difficult configuration
  • Monitor networking devices that employ the industry standards
  • Cost-efficient and effective open source SNMP servers
  • Commonly accepted and used due to its structure that is standardised

Here are the Cons of SNMP

  • Challenging and time-consuming
  • Tedious configuration
  • SNMP works on interval polling mechanism (takes place between intervals) and may be missed
  • System admin will not get information about any interface that is down and then picks up again between the polling interval
  • The large consumption of data at the standard intervals calls for high processing powers
