What are Cyber – Physical Systems?
CPSs are a new type of designed system that combines computing and physical processes in a dynamic situation. Big Data Analytics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Design and Embedded Systems, Internet of Things (IoT), Cybernetics, Mechatronics, and many more technical disciplines are covered by CPS.
Agriculture, water, energy, transportation, infrastructure, security, health, and manufacturing are all projected to benefit from the CPS systems, which are intelligent, autonomous, and efficient. As a result, it is being lauded as the next technological paradigm change that will dramatically boost growth and development.

About National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber – Physical Systems
The Union Cabinet has authorised the inauguration of the Department of Science and Technology’s (DST) National Mission on Interdisciplinary Cyber-Physical Systems (NM-ICPS). By organising and integrating countrywide efforts in knowledge production, human resource development, research, technology and product development, innovation, and commercialization, the Mission aspires to provide a solid foundation and a seamless environment for CPS technologies. It’ll be executed via a network of:
- 6 Sectoral Application Hubs (SAHs)
- 4 Technology Translation Research Parks (TTRPs)
- 15 Technology Innovation Hubs (TIHs)
Each of the hubs and technology parks will take a technology life cycle approach, covering all stages of the process.

The first part of the NM-ICPS would be executed by Science and Engineering Research Board (SERB) and will concentrate on the creation of six Technology Innovation Hubs (TIHs) in the following domains:
- Cybersecurity and Cyber Security for the Physical Infrastructures.
- Autonomous Systems and Robotics
- Advanced Communication Systems
- Data Services, Data Analytics and Databanks
- Technologies for Activators, Control, Sensors, and Internet of Things and Everything (IOT & IOE).
- Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence (ML/AI)

The mission’s goal is to build centres that are both productive and sustainable, as well as the ecosystems that go with them. The Hub development mechanism uses a bottom-up financial model, with government funding provided through the NM-ICPS for establishing capacities and gradually increasing resource creation in the project’s latter years.
The funding is intended to attract a critical mass of people. The Hub must improve its resource mobilisation capabilities. As a result, a mutualistic relationship between research and development and commercialization must be established. From the fourth year onwards, 20 to 30% of funding must come from private pools, and the hub must be completely self-sustaining by the end of five years.
- CPS technologies offer a good nation’s scientific, technical, and technology inventive capabilities a competitive advantage; they assist other government tasks, increase industrial and economic competence, and have genuinely evolved into a Strategic Resource.
- Driverless automobiles that interact safely with one other on smart roadways are just a few examples of possible uses. Sensors in the house to identify changes in health problems, better farming methods, and allowing scientists to address climate change challenges, among other things.
- The planned Mission will serve as a growth engine for national efforts in health, education, energy, environment, agriculture, strategic cum security, and industrial sectors, as well as Industry 4.0, SMART Cities, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), among other things.
- The Mission would increase job possibilities by teaching advanced skills and developing trained personnel in accordance with industry/societal needs. As a result, it is predicted that thousands of new jobs in the short term and lakhs of new jobs will be created in the longer run.
- It is an integrated system of emerging technologies that is being adopted as a priority by nations competing for development. CPS will undoubtedly result in a paradigm change in the required skill sets.
