This was question asked by a candidate that in what extent CDS Question Papers would be helpful and taken as a cue to UPSC CSE Prelims 2016. As I’m fairly new to it, I’m not sure whether or not, or to what extent CDS Papers of this year, can be taken as a cue to prelims 2016. Are questions of CDS papers of the similar standard as UPSC Civil Services Prelims Exam or they are more facts oriented?
So, here’s the answer to this question.
CDS 2016 is considered to be one of the most sought after examination and is participated by a large number of aspirants who dream to serve the country by joining the Indian defence forces. It is one of most prestigious examinations in the country conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in order to select candidates for admission to the Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, Officers Training Academy and Indian Military Academy.
The CDS Question Paper consists of three major parts and they are English, Mathematics, and General Knowledge. Among these three sections, the General Knowledge Section would be helpful and good for pre-practice for the Civil Services Exam Prelims. While the other two sections are totally different in the perspective of CSE Prelims in comparison to the UPSC CSE CSAT Prelims Paper.
So, before taking a look at how the CDS General Knowledge Section would play its part in UPSC Civil Services Prelims Exam preparation let’s have a fair knowledge about the rest two sections that are completely different from what is expected of CSAT Paper in UPSC Prelims. Let’s take a glance at these papers.
The English section is fairly easy, more or less at the level of a typical SSC-CGL question paper. The paper has more focus on the English usage aspect, in contrast to the CSE Prelims Paper in which is questions are more or less tilted towards Reading Comprehension Passages.
The Mathematics section of UPSC CDS is completely different from the requirements of UPSC CSE Prelims. UPSC CDS is completely oriented towards mathematics, whereas, Civil Service Prelims Exam is more oriented to Quantitative Aptitude. Again, Mathematics NCERTs of classes 9th and 10th are the best sources to deal with this section in the CDS paper.
So, here’s the third section the General Knowledge how it would be helpful in UPSC Civil Services Prelims Exam. The UPSC CDS General Knowledge Paper is considered to be easier compared to the UPSC CSE Prelims Papers. This section of the UPSC CDS requires a thorough reading of Class 9 and 10 NCERT Science and Social Science which is also a part of UPSC CSE Exam Syllabus. This is the one major reason why practising CDS General Knowledge Question Papers could play a significant part in the UPSC Civil Services Prelims Exam preparation. This approach would add more weight in the preparation of civil service prelims exam and be able to answer the General Knowledge section of the CDS exam means that the aspirant is on the right track.
