Why is it necessary to make notes for Ancient Indian History?

Over the ensuing years many questions from the Ancient Indian History segment have been featured in the IAS Exam. Hence making notes about Ancient Indian History topics is necessary. The topics generally asked from this segment is usually the pre-Mauryan period – rise of Mahajanapadas, to post-Gupta period-beginning of feudalism and centrifugal trends, has been given more significance.

Steps for effective note making for Ancient History UPSC

  1. The most effective notes and that are usually easy-to-understand are basically the ones based on the UPSC Syllabus. Focusing on the syllabus alone will be more than enough usually.
  2. Although, the UPSC Syllabus is enough, having alternative sources of information will also give a competitive edge for candidates. As a general rule of thumb 2-5 sources are enough to cover most topics that will feature in Ancient Indian History.
  3. But be sure to limit your sources. If you include too many sources, especially for small ideas or subheadings like that one, you’ll soon find yourself overwhelmed with a set of notes that are way too large to be able to use effectively, regardless of how detailed they are.
  4. If you’re writing your notes at a time when you’ve already studied a particular topic, then try to review the materials and information you were given for that topic and complete a set of notes for it before you get too deep into the next topic.
  5. Another great way to keep your notes updated is to collect any resources from school/library/online and cross-reference them with your information to ensure that your notes are correct and aren’t missing any vital information.
