About Cyclone Remal:

  • Cyclone Remal is expected to make landfall between Bangladesh and the West Bengal coast on May 26.
  • The “depression” over the Bay of Bengal is likely to intensify into a cyclonic storm by May 25 morning in the east-central region of the Bay of Bengal.
  • Cyclone Remal will cross the Bangladesh and West Bengal coasts as a severe cyclonic storm.
  • The cyclone may lead to wind speeds of 120 kilometres per hour according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
  • As a result of the cyclone, extremely heavy rainfall will occur in the coastal districts of West Bengal and north Odisha on May 26-27. Extremely heavy precipitation may hit parts of northeast India on May 27-28.
  • The name ‘Remal’ has been suggested by Oman and means ‘sand’ in Arabic.
  • The IMD predicted that a storm surge of about one metre above astronomical tide is likely to inundate low-lying areas of coastal West Bengal and 1.0-1.5 m over Bangladesh at the time of landfall.

Mitigating the impact of the cyclone:

  • The IMD has advised total suspension of fishing operations, regulation of surface transport and shipping operations, regulation of onshore and offshore operations as per guidelines, avoiding going outdoors in vulnerable areas, staying in safer places, etc.
