Concentration means taking your mind off everything and putting it to one thing. there is absolutely no substitute for paying attention. Effective study is possible only if you give it your full attention, throwing out all the irrelevant thoughts which interrupt the process of learning. The rays of the sun do not cause fire, because these rays are dispersed. But if the rays of the sun are converged on paper with the help of a lens, it can burn the paper at once. Similarly by converging your mental capabilities and evoking the power of concentration you can reap great benefits. While preparing for the UPSC Exam, studying the topics in depth and with concentration is necessary as one has to remember the same for a very long period of time. Here are five tips to help you improve concentration:

 

1.Focus on the task:

While you are studying, make sure that the study space is decluttered and you are in an environment where you are not frequently disturbed. Turn your phone and all the other electronic devices off. You do not have to study in this environment for 7-8 hours continuously, at a stretch. You can study for one hour with proper focus. This will help you understand and retain what you have studied. Keep your brain constantly active. Distractions don’t help you focus. So, you need to get rid of them at the earliest. At Least the obvious ones. Getting your mind to concentrate on something, takes about 15 minutes. If you keep getting distracted every 5 minutes, you won’t be able to focus.

2. Study with short breaks:

Plan your study well in advance. Either time your studies or set specific goals and take breaks when you reach your goal. By doing this, you will let your brain absorb the fodder without being bored. Breaks are essential, for you to concentrate and remember what is studied. Long cramming sessions will not help in the long run.

3.Stick to a routine:

Routines might sound boring. But a disciplined study schedule will help one in concentrating better. Prepare a study schedule for yourself and stick to it. Having a proper schedule will save you some time in deciding when and what to study. Follow the timetable regularly. Sticking to a routine will help you concentrate better.

4. Make study session interesting:

Continuous study sessions could be monotonous, making it really hard to concentrate. To make your study sessions fun, you can make short notes, flashcards, mind maps and diagrams while studying. An additional benefit of studying by this method is that you will not only enjoy the study sessions but will also have a lot of study material to revise from, at the end of it. Visual representation of topics is also a better way to remember.

5. Meditate, exercise, and eat a balanced diet:

Meditation is known to improve one’s concentration. By meditating for at least 10 minutes before you start your study session, you can declutter your brain to feed in new information. Exercise and right balanced diet also play a vital role in helping you concentrate on studies. Good food helps improve your attentive abilities. Heavy food makes your mind fidgety and makes it harder to concentrate. Eating heavy meals increases blood flow to the digestive system and in turn, causes reduced blood flow to the brain. While regularly exercising keeps you active, eating right will keep you healthy.

Lastly, do not expect to improve your concentration overnight. Improving concentration is a slow and gradual process. You can speed up the process by being disciplined and following a routine. Patience and perseverance are essential for having good concentration and to succeed in the IAS exam. Whenever you feel low just remember that somewhere, Someone is working harder than you.
