The civil services exam is a tough nut to crack. The three stages, the year-long process, the intense competition and the high stakes involved – all make it a very demanding exam and it takes some very special people to crack this exam. Candidates who top the IAS exam generate a lot of curiosity and aspirants everywhere are eager to hear their stories. The average age of UPSC selected candidates who clear this exam is 26.9 years according to a study. Some people clear this exam and even top it at a very young age, many in their first attempt. UPSC Age Limit

The respective categories and age limits are listed below.

  1. General Category – 32 years and the maximum number of attempts are 6.
  2. OBC – Creamy layer – 32 years and the maximum attempts are 6.
  3. OBC – Non Creamy layer – 35 years and the maximum attempts are 9.
  4. SC/ST – 37 years – no cap on the number of attempts till the age limit of 37 years.

For UPSC 2023, the minimum age would have been 21 as of 1st August 2023, and the maximum age should not exceed 32 years.
