Anterior vs Posterior Placenta

The placenta is vital at the time of pregnancy. These are structures developing in the uterus at the time of pregnancy and render nutrients and oxygen to the growing foetus and remove the wastes from the blood of the baby.

The placenta gets attached to the uterine walls, and the umbilical cords of the foetus emerge from it. Typically, this structure is attached to the side, top, back or front of the uterus. It is rare for the placenta to attach to the lower side of the uterus. In this case, it is referred to as placenta previa or low-lying placenta. The location of the placenta is determined by carrying out an ultrasound test.

The structure of the placenta is temporary, and it is through this structure that the growing foetus is supplied with nutrients and oxygen. Its position is vital as it determines if birth is through the vagina or a caesarean will be a safer option. Hence, the location of the placenta can be significant in determining the outcome of pregnancy.

Anterior placenta

• Placenta is attached to the front of the uterus
• It can create a space between the abdomen and the baby. It can decrease the sensation of the movement of the baby
• It is a common location for the attachment

Posterior placenta

• The placenta is attached to the back of the uterus
• Typically it is considered to be the best location for the foetus and gives it the capability to move into the anterior position just before the birth
• The position does not interfere with the development or growth of the baby
