The human body contains four basic types of bones:
- The long bone is long and thin in shape. It acts as levers to enable movement, assisted by muscles. Examples are the bones in the arms and legs (except wrists, kneecaps and ankles).
- Short bone features a cube-like, squat form. Examples are the bones in the wrists and ankles.
- A flat bone has a broad, flat surface. Ribs, shoulder blades, breast bones, and skull bones are a few examples.
- An irregular bone is one whose shape does not fit any of the above three categories. Examples are the bones in the spine (vertebrae).
