How to increase study hours effectively? NEET 2023 exam Preparation

1. Measure Actual Study Time

We all know that time management is important. But we often forget to measure the productive hours we spend. First, we must measure the study hours in order to work on it and increase it. Use a stopwatch to calculate the actual study time. This means we have to pause the timer in case of any distractions.

Each and every day, try to increase the productive hours gradually. Condition the mind in such a way that breaks are avoided till we reach the goal.

2. Limit Distractions

As mentioned earlier, distractions are to be avoided in order to increase productivity. It might be difficult to stay focused for a long period of time. So, schedule your breaks in between so that you do not deviate much from preparations. This means we can include productive screen time. Productive screen time includes online lectures and quizzes related to NEET.

Even if it is productive, try to have decreased screen time as it might further lead to distractions.

3. Law of Diminishing Returns

This economics concept can also be applied to human behaviour and psychology. The law states that any input will receive a maximum output during the initial phase. Upon hitting a certain point, every additional input will give delayed or diminishing output. This might further lead to negative returns.

In terms of exam preparations, only the first few hours of study will give a positive output. Every extended hour will give diminishing output. So, schedule blocks of time for your preparations. Do not sit for a long stretch of 6 hours. Instead, separate it into 3 blocks of 2 hours each with small breaks in between.

4. Preset Schedule

It is important to have a preset goal before starting any activity. Curate daily as well as weekly schedules based on the NEET syllabus. Also, do not try to postpone anything in ;the schedule. A postponement will lead to inconsistency in achieving the set goals. The ultimate aim of scheduling is to have a consistent and productive workflow.

5. Plan Your Breaks

While planning study schedules, it is also essential to plan breaks. Everyone needs a break to refuel, recharge and jump back to full speed. We can have 15 to 20 minutes of short breaks in between every 2-3 hours of study. Make sure that the breaks are fruitful. This invariably means that we should avoid social media which can exhaust our energy instead of refuelling it. Instead, listen to music, take a walk, do some physical activity or talk with your friends.

6. Active vs Passive Study

Our total study hours can be divided into blocks of time with breaks in between. The time blocks can be further divided into two – active study time and passive study time. Active time is the period when the brain is active to learn new concepts. Thus, schedule new chapters and difficult concepts during this hour. Passive time is the period when brain activity is slightly less. Try to have revisions during the passive time period.

Likewise, take mock tests during the active time and schedule the mock analyses in passive hours. Also, gradually change your active hours to 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. which is the examination timing.

7. Positive Environment

It is important to have a positive ambience both inside as well as around us. Most of us might neglect the importance of maintaining positive surroundings. This can be achieved just by cleaning your study area or room. A clean, well-lit and ventilated room can instantly elevate your mood and set a positive frame of mind. Decorate the room with pleasant colors and fewer distractions. Also, try to be around optimistic people.

8. Eat Healthy and Exercise

Body and mind must work hand in hand to give maximum output. In previous pointers, we saw how to recharge the mind with enough breaks and a positive environment. But how to recharge the body?

Simple physical activities and a healthy balanced diet are enough to refuel the body. Try to replace a portion of your carbs with antioxidant-rich fruits. This ensures an active body which can perform with maximum productivity. Also, the focus here is to spend quality preparation time. It is also important to set the biological sleep clock right. Tune the sleep schedule in such a way that you are at maximum alertness during the afternoon time (2:00 to 5:00 p.m.).
